A firefighter was injured Wednesday morning when a chimney collapsed as crews were battling flames at a house fire in Pittsburgh’s Elliott neighborhood.

According to authorities, the blaze started at a vacant house at the corner of Marena and Romona streets just after 4 a.m.

The fire was basically under control when the chimney collapsed and debris fell on a firefighter.

The man, whose name has not been released, didn’t move for a few minutes, but could later be seen walking around holding his arm. His condition has not been released.

Officials said the house that caught fire was vacant because the owners were doing some remodeling before new people moved in in March.

Herbert Thornton was one of several people who live next door to the house and was forced out of his home as a precaution.

“I saw the flames out of my window,” Thornton said. “The windows were cracking and I saw the ceiling crack. That’s when I hurried up and rushed out of my room.”

No other injuries were reported in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
